Student musicians shine in the 2016 Concert of Soloists
Performing at a high level in an ensemble takes years of practice. It is an even greater challenge, however, to play as a soloist in front of a large audience while being accompanied by a 100-piece orchestra made up entirely of fellow students.
For more than 30 years, the winners of the Concert of Soloists competition have risen to this same opportunity, as they perform a concerto or virtuosic piece in front of hundreds at ASU Gammage and strive to deliver a compelling performance.
The annual Concert of Soloists competition is made up of several rounds. First, participants compete at the studio level. Then those finalists move on to their area round, and last, the chosen few perform during the finals recital, which most recently took place Nov. 10, 2015. During this finals recital, the performers are judged by a panel of School of Music faculty, who select the winners to perform for the final Concert of Soloists with the ASU Symphony Orchestra, which is coming up this year on Feb. 1, 2016.

About the speakers
João Francisco Gonçalves, Double bass
João Francisco Gonçalves was born in 1992 in Trofa, the city where he currently resides. He was admitted at Escola Profissional e Artística do Vale do Ave in the academic year of 2004/2005, in the Double Bass class taught by Professor Nuno Arrais. In 2008/2009 he transferred to Professor Rui Fontes double bass class. In 2010 he finished the course and enrolled at University of Minho in the Double Bass class taught by Professor Nuno Arrais. In the academic year of 2016/2017, he began his Masters degree in Music Teaching at the University of Minho, completing it in 2018. During his career he was part of numerous orchestras, including Orquestra Artavinhos, Orquestra Artave, Orquestra Aproarte de Sopros, Orquestra Aproarte Sinfónica, Orquestra Nacional de Ópera, Orquestra da Universidade do Minho, Orquestra do Festival Harmus, Orquestra Orfeão de Leiria, Fundação Orquestra Studio, Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera in Heritage Orchestra being directed by maestros such as Luís Machado, Emílio de César, Ernst Schelle, António Saiote, Cesário Costa, Rui Massena, Jean-Marc Burfin, António Cassuto, Joana Carneiro, Graça Moura, Kevin Wauldron, Vítor Matos, Joseph Vella, among others. In
