    American former actor and model (born 1960)

    Michael Earl Schoeffling (born December 10, 1960) is an American former actor and model. He is known for playing the roles of Jake Ryan in Sixteen Candles, Al Carver in Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken, Kuch in Vision Quest, and Joe in Mermaids.[1]

    Early life and education

    Schoeffling was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and raised in South Jersey. He graduated from Cherokee High School in Evesham Township, New Jersey.[citation needed] He attended Temple University in Philadelphia, where he majored in liberal arts.[citation needed] In the mid-1980s he began modelling for GQ,[1] and photographer Bruce Weber paid for his acting classes[citation needed] at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Manhattan.[1]

    Schoeffling came to international prominence at the age of 23 for his role as Jake Ryan, the popular yet sensitive high school athlete on whom Molly Ringwald's character has a crush in the teen film Sixteen Candles. Thanks, kids, for introducing us to perhaps the most frightening show currently being broadcast on our local screens. We refer, of course, to MTV's My Super Sweet 16. Back in the day, even we were known to turn on MTV once in a while to catch a cool music video. And we admit that we're considered "past it" by most people of our children's generation, even though we do occasionally enjoy some of what passes for music these days. But MTV's since branched out big time, creating more channels and its own reality show programming, much of which we submit is downright awful, but even worse, disturbing. Take My Super Sweet 16, which essentially follows young American girls as they plan their big party. Nothing wrong with that, on the face of it. A Sweet 16 is a well-known cultural phenomenon in the US and elsewhere, and seemingly unobjectionable. But wait - this is MTV we're talking about, where reality programming has to be big,
