A Coach in Progress depicts the catastrophe of the Southern Airways flight that crashed en route to Huntington, West Virginia, in 1970, killing all seventy-five passengers on board: players, coaches, and boosters of the Marshall University football team, as well as the flight crew. From this tragedy, the foundation of the Marshall football program was laid, and it has thrived ever since, culminating with the Thundering Herd being the winningest team in the NCAA Division I program in the 1990s, portrayed in the hit movie We Are Marshall, and currently under the direction of head coach Doc Holliday.
This book is written from the viewpoint of Red Dawson, a former Marshall assistant football coach, who was one of the few team members not on the plane. Marcus Edward "Doc" Holliday (born July 16, 1973) is a former American footballrunning back who played with the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. He played college football at Memphis.[1][2]
College career
[edit]Holliday, who grew up in Memphis, was a fan of the Memphis Tigers men's basketball program and decided to commit to the University of Memphis for that reason,[3] choosing it over Ole Miss, Northern Illinois, Arkansas, Arkansas State, and Tennessee.[4] While at Memphis, he was friends with several basketball players and future NBA stars, including Penny Hardaway and David Vaughn.[3]
Holliday played for the Memphis Tigers football team from 1991 to 1994. In 1994, he was the school's rushing leader with 618 yards and three touchdowns that year. He also played in the 1994 Blue–Gray Game.[5]
During a 13–0 shutout win against Tulane in 1994, Holliday set the Memphis record for most rushing attempts in a single game with 42, gaining 151 yards in the process.[6] The record still stands as of 2021.[5]
